Fun while you run at the Wreake Runners |
| |
The junior section of Wreake Runners boasts around 100 members of all ages and abilities and although we have some extremely talented athletes who take things seriously when it comes to training and competing, the clubs ethos is that running and athletics generally should be fun and that each member should be given the support ,encouragement and opportunity to thrive regardless of their experience or aspirations. All of our coaches hold UKA qualifications and all have current CRB certificates.
As a traditional running club naturally our emphasis is on running events however this encompasses all distances from sprints to the longer distance events, however 2009 sees us take part for the first time ever in a Track and Field league which will offer summer competition for all of our athletes from 8 -17 years in a wider range of disciplines.
Our sessions are held each Saturday morning on the grass track at the front of the College, again in keeping with our beliefs that we should operate in a welcoming and supportive way we will always warm up as a whole group before splitting off into various training groups and then always finish the session with a mass relay event (we have not missed a club relay on a Saturday morning for almost 8 years!) followed by a cool and stretch down which again brings the club together. When the light nights come this year there will also be a midweek club night on a Wednesday which will see us not only train on the track but get out on the fields and footpaths around the area for some training for the more experienced athletes. |

This month has been excellent with the start of
the Derby Runner League and the Charnwood Sports
Awards.Wreake Juniors won the 'Junior Team of the
Year' and have added to the England Athletics East
Midlands Junior Club of the Year title after winning
promotion in the Heart of England Track and Field
League. We beat Loughborough RUFC U12s and Loughborough
Town Swimming Diddy Squad. In attendance representing
Wreake were John and Jen, Jenny Smith, Spencer and
Archie Lyon, Charlotte Merry, Olly Stabler, Stu
Markham, Jeannie Lyon, Richard and Frances Bettsworth
and myself. We were pleased and proud to win and
collect the award but also enjoyed the evening including
the two course meal, the atmosphere and the achievements
of each and every sportsperson in the room. Training
on Saturday 28th November was different with the
appearance of a top sprinting coach and two of his
sprinters present to deliver tough but expert tuition
to the sprint group. |
