Cambridge Half Marathon

by Toby.

Cyclists! Lots of lots of cyclists! From walking to the course to walking back to the car, ding ding ding a cyclist. After a check of my location to see Del Boy & Rodney (Matts Van) had driven to Cambridge & not Amsterdam, it was time to use the facilities, drop the bags off, quick warm up along the canal and head to the start! Just the 4 Wreakies taking part on the flat 13.1 mile course! An amazing run from my hun who achieved a PB of 1:17:50 (1:16 if he didn’t say hello to each lovely person cheering us crazy lot on) and not to forget excellent times from Bob (2:02:25) & Reb (2:13:43), who achieved an incredible PB by 5 minutes! Both smashed it with the focus being on their upcoming marathons in April & May. Apologies for blowing my own trumpet but I ran Sub 1:15 achieving 1:14:15. Never in my life did I think I could achieve this so feeling pretty chuffed! Right that’s enough of me.

The Mayor of Cambridge set us off, onto the flat and in places very twisty (glad there were signposts & marshalls) course.  The word ‘hill’ must be a swear word around Cambridge, as they were non-existent! It is mainly road, but a nice section goes through the University. As we overcame the twists and turns, the finish line soon approached with a wave of people cheering us on! From start to finish, there was a brilliant atmosphere throughout the course, which is always welcome. I always like after my efforts of completing a race, a medal & goody bag! But a first for me today, when receiving salt in my goody bag! I thought about making a joke about salt, then I thought nah, that doesn’t sound fun! (sorry I could not leave this report without some reference to science being we ran through the University!)

Once again, a huge well done to everybody who ran today! Perfect conditions & PBs were the common theme! Now, a well deserved chilled out afternoon. Would I do this again? Deffo! The atmosphere was fantastic and it helps that the course was nice and flat. Sorry did I mention it was flat. I am sure John White would love it!! It was a super Sunday all round for Wreakies with lots of us taking part in long runs & races! You are all smashing it, let’s keep going!
